A beautiful yet practical pair of teak bedside cabinets by Mid-Century British furniture makers Remploy. Been completely stripped and refinished in a high-quality & long-lasting lacquer to reinstate the items original lustre & sheen and to ensure durability well into the future. The doors of the cabinets have also been ebonised to create a more contemporary feel. Whilst these items are now in excellent condition they remain vintage and thus will not be perfect. Item located in Burscough, Lancashire. The lacquer finishes applied to furniture in the 1960s & 1970s had an expected lifespan of 20-30 years. Clearly the manufacturers did something right as in most instances the finishes have lasted a lot longer! However in recent times much of the furniture that comes to me has failed finish (degradation, disintegration, wear, clouding etc) despite having been carefully cared for by original owners. The vast majority of Mid-Century teak furniture was originally finished with several layers of tinted lacquer i. E lacquer with brown colours added and clear lacquer. Only a very tiny minority of companies originally finished their furniture with Danish/Teak oil.

Theres a simple reason for this its simply not very hard wearing. For many in the industry oil and wax are quick (they are simply applied over the original finish in many instances), easy and cheap ways to refinish a product that looks good when photographed, yet in person often doesnt stand up to closer inspection. The vast majority of furniture listed by Surtees of Burscough has been completely stripped, repaired and refinished with colour and a high-performance waterborne (environmentally friendly) lacquer.

This process is more expensive and time consuming but produces finishes that are more true to the original intended look and can withstand the rigours and mishaps of everyday life (water spills, knocks, food etc). A lacquer finish ensures that not only will your furniture look richer in colour and tone but it will have an inbuilt durability that ensures it will look great for decades to come.
